Choosing a Mover [ TOP ]
- Pick a Moving Company.Moving Companies set their own standards and are answerable to the consumers.
- If possible, get references from friends and people you trust before choosing a moving company.
- Moving companies like repeat customers. If you have experience with a mover, tell them.
- Call at least two movers and have them come to your home. Show them in detail what you are moving and give them precise instructions on the services you require (IE packing, appliance service, valuation) and have them each provide you with a written, guaranteed estimate. This is important because in many jurisdictions the mover can hold your furniture until their bill is satisfied. Without that written guarantee you have no price certainty.
- Pick the mover who offers the best combination of service and price.
Packing [ TOP ]
- If you have instructed the mover to do the packing, simply stand back and let them go to it. Movers will generally not pack anything that is physically attached to the home so if you have items such as paper towel holders, light fixtures and drape tracks that are attached to the home, take them down and leave them near by. There are also some chemical, corrosive and flammable items that the movers cannot take. In a case where the move is doing the packing, leave these items where they are. The mover will pack what they can and leave what they cannot pack. When the packers are finished, go through the home and collect the non-admissible items.
- Designate an area such as a closet and mark on the door "do not pack".
- Place everything that you do not want the packers to pack in that closet. Items such as suitcases, keys, important papers and that "special" child's toy. Remember, the packer will not try and decide whether something like the garage door opener should or should not be packed.
- If you are doing some or all of the packing, start early. Most people underestimate the time it takes to do packing and end up rushed as the moving day approaches. Since moving is stressful enough, don't add to it by a lot of last minute packing. Many items of seasonal value or items in the garage or basement can be packed months early. If the movers are doing some of the packing, have the rest done before they get there.
- Use sturdy cartons with flaps that completely seal the carton. Mark the cartons with your name, the room the contents came from and the contents with indelible marker. In general, pack heavy items (books and tools) in smaller cartons no bigger than two cubic feet and lighter, bulkier items (bedding, clothes) in larger cartons. Packing should be done so that there is no extra space left in a carton and items are wrapped in such a way that they are not rattling or rubbing against each other. For specific packing instructions, please go to the " Canadian Relocation Systems Guide To Household Packing" .
- Please remember that movers only take full responsibility for items they pack themselves. If something is broken in a carton you have packed and the carton has no obvious damage (a puncture for example), the mover is not responsible because they had no control over how the packing was done. That is why many people have the mover pack breakable items while they pack the rest.
Loading [ TOP ]
- Make sure the walk ways are clear of snow and other obstructions.
- They driver is the job foreman and he will inventory the contents of your house and give everything an identifying number. On this inventory will be the condition of furniture. If you are not sure what condition is being marked against your furniture or you disagree with the driver, ask him to explain or clarify. You will be asked to sign his inventory.
- When loading is complete, ask the driver to accompany you in a tour around the home to make sure no items are being left behind.
- Make sure the driver has as many contact numbers as you can give him and if you have directions to your new home, particularly if you are moving into a newly developed area, please give them to him.
- The driver may provide you with an inventory check off sheet that will allow you to check off the number on items as they are brought into your home. If not, use the inventories provided to you at loading. Ask the driver and his helpers to call out the number of the items as they are being brought into the home.
- Let electronic appliances such as PC's and TV's acclimatize to the home before turning them on.
- Please make sure that small children are away from the walk way, door and the moving truck. When carrying items movers have reduced visibility, especially around their feet, and children should know the danger.
- Make note of any new damages or items not checked off on the inventory before the driver leaves. This will strengthen your cargo claim.
- If you have requested and paid for unpacking, that will be done either by the driver at the time of unloading or a destination agent, usually the day after unloading. Movers unpack by emptying the cartons and placing the items on counters, beds, dresser tops and floors. Many people believe what movers call unpacking and what they would call unpacking are different things but the service the movers are really offering is to get rid of the packing material for you. If you choose to unpack yourself, you may have to dispose of the packing material yourself (check with your destination agent). If you are, cartons in good shape are hot sellers at garage sales.
Other Tips [ TOP ]
- Unless billing or credit arrangements have been made, payment is COD with cash or certified check or credit card.
- Movers sell valuation which functions like insurance. Unless you have alternate sources of insurance, purchase the valuation that will give you replacement value of your goods. When comparing movers, make sure the valuation costs are included in the written, guaranteed estimate.
- Have a professional company to prepare your appliances for shipping. Also have the appliance technician certify the appliance is in working order. This will strengthen your claim if the appliance is not working at destination. If you are unsure of which technician to call, contact your origin agent for names and numbers.
- If you have a cargo claim, contact the destination agent as soon as possible and inform them. They will probably send a claims form for you to fill in and return or send a representative to your home to complete the form. In contact with the agent you may be asked to reference an order number. Most van lines place this number near the top, right hand corner of the bill of lading.
